The value in starting

Significant data gaps on transgender and nonbinary individuals exist, limiting our understanding of their representation across leadership and their ability to secure capital.

In 2021, Statistics Canada pioneered a change by allowing individuals to self-report their gender in addition to sex at birth in the Census, making Canada the first country to collect census data on transgender and nonbinary people.

While shortcomings and other gaps remain, this initiative represents an essential beginning. Census data on transgender and nonbinary individuals provides a benchmark to assess various aspects, including their representation in leadership roles and capital distribution.

Though the initial efforts to gather data on transgender and nonbinary individuals are not perfect, acknowledging and addressing these gaps paves the way for more comprehensive, inclusive, and intersectional data collection in the future. Starting, even imperfectly, sets a precedent, creates momentum, and opens doors for improvement.
