Tl;dr: We build trust by acknowledging our missteps.
With deep trust, funders, leaders, and communities can work more effectively and creatively.
Fear, especially the fear of losing trust, can be a significant barrier. Tackling systemic issues requires us to sit with discomfort. There is pressure to avoid missteps and maintain an image of infallibility, especially when public commitments have been made. We might prioritize quick wins over enduring change because the appearance of progress supersedes the challenging work of dismantling barriers.
Yet, we build trust by acknowledging our missteps and sharing our learning. We previously shared research that shows companies who disclose their lack of progress in equity work are still seen as more trustworthy than those who don’t disclose anything.
Steering capital towards underfunded leaders and communities remains a significant challenge. When was the last time we gained insights from investors or funders about their own missteps as they work toward this objective?
Learning out loud can help us balance the tension between trust and fear. By openly communicating our decisions and learnings, we alleviate the fear of the unknown and promote accountability. It helps us facilitate healthier collaboration among funders, and between funders, leaders, and communities.
