If you’re not present, you’re invisible.

Last week, I moderated an intimate conversation with Kenneth Deer, an award-winning journalist, educator, and internationally renowned Indigenous rights activist, for some of our New Power Network members.

Drawing from his extensive experience in building a movement alongside underfunded Indigenous leaders, Kenneth shared an insight that struck a chord with us: “Presence is everything. If you are not present, you are invisible.”

Over his 37-year journey, Kenneth and his colleagues have encountered immense barriers in getting a seat and a voice at decision-making tables. He emphasized the critical role that support from funders plays in building coalitions among Indigenous leaders, amplifying their voices, and advocating for their rights on global platforms like the United Nations.

A landmark achievement in this advocacy was the adoption of the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP) in 2007, which saw 144 states voting in favor. However, it was not until 2021 that Canada began to formally adopt the UNDRIP, illustrating the long road toward recognition and implementation of Indigenous rights.

If you want to explore how you can support his work at the Indigenous Coordinating Body, let us know and we will connect you with Kenneth.
