We recently concluded our Capital Unlocked 2024 Summit, a dynamic and inspiring gathering that brought together philanthropy, finance, entrepreneurship, and technology leaders. The two-day gathering pulsed with energy and purpose, highlighting both the pressing challenges and exciting opportunities in reshaping capital access in Canada.

I sat down with Arian Simone, founder of the Fearless Fund, to discuss her work and journey, including their recent legal challenge. After a 13-month lawsuit that halted their grant program, the Fearless Fund emerged victorious, reaffirming the legality of supporting women of colour entrepreneurs.

The Fearless Fund case is not unique to the United States, and Canada is not immune to the pushback that is coming from south of the border. Alongside the Executive Director of Nature Canada, Emily McMillan, and their legal counsel Andrew Cleland, we explored a human rights complaint to Nature Canada’s Black, Indigenous and people of colour youth employment program.

The challenges to equity initiatives are widespread, crossing borders and sectors.

What do we do during a moment of heightened polarization? Change requires action. Despite the challenges, the energy and dedication at the summit were sources of optimism. The gathering showcased tools, insights, and determination that can combine boardroom decisions, philanthropic and investment strategies with advocacy and bold experimentation. This gathering offered hope for tangible improvements in capital access for diverse communities.

The Summit confirmed a strong and diverse coalition of funders, investors, asset managers, and community leaders dedicated to investing in Canada’s diversity. Now, the work continues to capitalize on untapped talent.
